The Match 09/10

We're not going to put an in depth match report on these pages, after all by the time the final whistle blows these days everybody knows how we've gone on, how we've played, who was good and who wasn't.  The games long gone global and even babes in arms seem to have access to the Internet, in fact most have probably got one of those mobile phones that keeps them in touch with everything going on at the match, these are nothing more than a passing mention.

If you want to read what we really think about the games we play and what happened on our day at the match why not SUBSCRIBE to our fanzine, Red All Over The Land.  Details are available on the HOME page of this site.

Now- The Match

Saturday October 17th: v Sunderland; away [Premiership] Lost 0-1 - freak goal it may have been, whether or not it should have been allowed doesn't matter.  We were the arse end of whatever you like.  No need to point fingers apart from at whoever threw the beach ball on because this was another day when nobody performed and gave the proof, if needed, that without Gerrard and Torres [both injured] and Mascherano [on the bench] we've got nothing as back up.  The manager has got to sort many things out and quick.  The title bid has probably gone if it was ever there and now it's a fight to stay in touch with the top 4.

Sunday October 4th: v Chelsea; away [Premiership] Lost 0-2 - but to be fair for over an hour this was looking like 'anybody's game'.  Sadly Mascherano lost the ball in midfield giving Chelsea the opportunity to break and they did and we got punished.  Bits of individual brilliance can win games but individual mistakes can lose games.  Today, just as in other games this season we made a mistake and paid the price only today we paid it in full.  Chelsea weren't better than us, for that first hour we were their equal but we didn't take the couple of chances that came our way but when we gave them a sniff that was it.  The second goal came near enough right on time but by then our luck had already ran out.  It's not going to get any easier either.

Tuesday September 29th: v Fiorentina; away [Champions League] Lost 0-2 - and we were lucky it was only two!  Outplayed and outfought by a side that blended both passion and controlled aggression and gave us a first half beating that we couldn't handle.  We defended badly but had nothing in midfield and very little in attack.  The second half was better than the first but apart from a brief spell right at the start of the second half we rarely looked like scoring.  Beating the likes of Hull and Burnley is one thing - this was that different face we mentioned.

Saturday September 26th: v Hull City; home [Premiership] Won 6-1 - okay so Hull aren't very good but you can only beat what's in front of you and we did that.  The Torres hattrick might have been the highlight of the afternoon and maybe Gerrard's goal was a complete fluke - or maybe not - but the most pleasing thing was how we kept going forward even when we were as good as home and dry.  Good to see Babel come on and show some desire, his first goal was a result of Dutch teamwork and when your lucks in you can score goals like his second.  Now that was a complete fluke.  This is probably as easy as it will get the fixture list takes on a different face in October.

Tuesday September 22nd: v Leeds United; away [League Cup] Won 1-0 - great to see Elland Road full again and great to be back there on business even if it was 'only' The League Cup.  They put up the expected fight but a touch of class from Ngog won the day - or the night if you prefer - and we all went home happy.

Saturday September 19th: v West Ham; away [Premiership] Won 3-2 - did you bounce along when Torres scored his goals?  He was the difference between the two sides as once again out defence looked as steady as a jelly.  Entertaining it might be for some nerve tester for the rest.  Either Gerrard or Kuyt got the other goal with Gerrard claiming it, Kuyt saying he could have it but Sky would probably have a week of debate should that happen.

Wednesday September 16th: v Debreceni; home [Champions League] Won 1-0 - and what a hard days night this was!  The so-called whipping boys of the group turned up and decided to put up a fight, they evidently don't read scripts in Hungary.  A lone goal from Kuyt won the game and the points but it wasn't as they said it would be was it.  Brilliant Hungarian support.

Saturday September 12th: v Burnley; home [Premiership] Won 4-0 - in the end a stroll in the warm late summer or early autumn sunshine and a hattrick for Benayoun who had a superb game.  Kuyt got the other after Benny had seen a shot saved but dropped by the 'keeper.

Saturday August 29th: v Bolton; away [Premiership] Won 3-2 - if we can defend as bad as this against a poor Bolton side...well what hope is there?  Well there's some if Gerrard and Torres can keep playing the way they played in the last half an hour.  Then again, we can't be certain that every team will end up with 10-men.  Another Glen Johnson goal, that's two this season.  Torres scored again so he's got three and Gerrard got the winner, his second of the campaign.  Nerves shredded.

Monday August 24th: v Aston Villa; home [Premiership] Lost 1-3 - after the first 10 minutes we were poor and this first home Premiership loss for about 18-months was deserved.  Torres gave us hope when he reduced the deficit to 1-2 but Gerrard's rash challenge that led to a penalty ended them.

Wednesday August 19th: v Stoke; home [Premiership] Won 4-0 - an early goal from Torres got the show on the road and a second just before halftime from Johnson eased the nerves and the tension that hovered over Anfield.  Brilliance from Gerrard set up Kuyt for number three and right on time Ngog headed number four.

Sunday August 16th: v Spurs; away [Premiership] Lost 1-2 - not the start we wanted but in truth we got what we deserved.  Our goal came from a Gerrard penalty
